I wonder if this was another case of Albia trying to add a powerful Spark to her "collection". Waybackwhen, Gil's threats to Wooster made it clear that he knew that Agatha might have trouble getting away from Albia.
I inferred that Gil was aware that Klaus had done something to piss off Albia, and that she was very powerful. What I didn't expect was that she was a "goddess" and apparently he had dumped her.
"But if you ever do win an invitation from her, beware — it's like being mugged in a dark alley by a goddess. You're not the same man after. Not to mention critical feminine body parts on a scale you can actually find, and as for the fangs, there's no thrill quite like—"
IDK, he doesn't seem shocked by the affair so much as the fact that Klaus was once a young man rather than springing fully-formed into being as a dour fifty-year-old.
To be fair, I feel like there's a pretty major distinction between "being aware your dad had relationships in the past" and "being confronted with someone who Actually Knew Him Then"
Goodness knows hearing about my dad when he was in college tends to leave me gobsmacked.
Can we definitely exclude the possibility that Albia is Gil's mother? I know there are major problems with it (like whether they would have been anywhere near each other if Klaus was in Skifander), but I don't know of a way to refute it.
Not definitely, but wouldn't Klaus have more trouble taking their son with him? In Skifander, he was primary care-giver, I'm not sure he'd have the same access under Albia.
Is Gil playing up his distractibility to disarm Thorpe and maybe the Baron inside his head?
He seems to do 'harmless, distractible' to make friends (like Wooster) and maybe also to play up his likability when Agatha's in the room. I could see him emphasizing that persona whenever he needs to be underestimated.

Hearing the story now from the other side, I think that Gil is probably right, and that the problem is him, and not them.
