I wonder if this was another case of Albia trying to add a powerful Spark to her "collection". Waybackwhen, Gil's threats to Wooster made it clear that he knew that Agatha might have trouble getting away from Albia.
Can we definitely exclude the possibility that Albia is Gil's mother? I know there are major problems with it (like whether they would have been anywhere near each other if Klaus was in Skifander), but I don't know of a way to refute it.
Is Gil playing up his distractibility to disarm Thorpe and maybe the Baron inside his head?
He seems to do 'harmless, distractible' to make friends (like Wooster) and maybe also to play up his likability when Agatha's in the room. I could see him emphasizing that persona whenever he needs to be underestimated.
