Taking a Break

Some players complain about video games
Where your ammo is finite or weapons can break,
But many examples I know of are fun,
So I have to reply with an alternate take.

A whole lot of games have expendable items
For non-combat purposes such as to heal.
Allowing that feat without limit would make
The objective too easy and lose its appeal.

It’s true that disarmament during a battle
Is harsh and alarming to those unprepared,
But keeping the prospect in mind gives incentive
To swap out equipment for what can be spared.

It forces the players to vary their fighting.
The matches won’t feel so alike all the while.
It adds to the challenge, but not to the point
Of frustration, I find, so I’m glad for the style.

JFC what is it about Greeks?

A shocking number of people will blithely tell us all about the book they read, in English, on an English-language subreddit, and never tell us that they didn't read it in English. I can only catch so many of them - if they don't say "English isn't my first language" or make any obvious foreign language errors then I'll never know. (Some of them say "I read this in my own language" and then don't tell us what that language was.)

Most of these people, if prompted, will tell you what language they read it in. Three times now, I've had to ask twice because they refused to answer the question in a useful way, and every time that person has been Greek.

I thought it was a little funny the second time, but three times is the start of a worrying pattern, especially as it's not at all the most popular not-English language posted there. Maybe there's something going badly wrong with their school system?

(And, sidenote, even if you're certain it was translated from English you still ought to tell us the language it was written in. At least in theory this can help us weed out false positives, although I may be expecting too much of fellow commenters to that subreddit.)

A wild one this time. A herd of mammoths had moved to my neighborhood, they would walk up to doors to see what the big deal with houses was. Someone was riding a loud motorcycle in loops and the herd became enraged and kicked the motorcycle over.

Decided today to go to the Drexel Museum of Natural History. But Avi was interested too, yet couldn't go today. Decided on the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. Close enough to walk to, if I wanted a brisk 20 minute walk in dew point 20 C weather. Easy bike, but taking my bike raises concerns about leaving it locked for hours in Center City. So went to Indego bikeshare, and an ebike, partly because that's all the station had. Read more... )

The character had several things happening at once.

So I juggled them all, and found that as soon as it got past that, I realized that dead time hit.  Some tedious stretches for her.

Interrupted, but first I have to establish them.

Just Stab Me Now by Jill Bearup

A comic tale of a writer taking off into fantasy romance for a break. And to escape her frustrating job.

Her notion of a heroine hits the actual heroine, who is middle-aged, a widow, and the mother of two children trying desperately to protect them.

things to be aware of

If you've read Sherlock Holmes, you likely recall his supposedly paying attention to all details around him, like how many steps were in the staircase. That seems mostly unnecessary[1], and 'all' details is bunk/impossible... but I am building up a list of things to try to be more conscious of, whether for personal utility or good citizenship. And a recent afternoon where I kept an eye out for bike racks, in an area I've been up and down multiple times since March, and discovered many racks I had been totally unaware of, highlighted how much difference conscious attention can make. Isn't the moon dark too,
most of the time?

And doesn't the white page
seem unfinished

without the dark stain
of alphabets?

When God demanded light,
he didn't banish darkness.

Instead he invented
ebony and crows

and that small mole
on your left cheekbone.

Or did you mean to ask
"Why are you sad so often?"

Ask the moon.
Ask what it has witnessed.

This is an offering of the game Inevitable, "doomed Arthurian Western RPG rulebook" from SoulMuppet Publishing, available for one week only.

https://bundleofholding.com/promo/list/key/KingMalavan

I'm not convinced that Arthurian mythic structures and the Wild West really go together - but there are a LOT of magical wild west game settings out there (I could mention my own Elvis: The Legendary Tours, for example) and it's probable that some people will find the idea interesting. I'll be honest, I tend to prefer something a little less doom-laden, so it probably isn't one for me. Presentation is pretty good, at a quick look I'm not sure that the rules are explained as well as I would like but I may be being unfair. It's pretty cheap and if you can avoid endless Monty Python jokes it could be worth a look.

Ideally something I can get through the NYPL or the Queens Public Library (I haven't yet re-upped my Brooklyn Public Library card. I ought to go do that this weekend or the week after.)

I suppose I should set a good example and rec something to all of you first. Lemme see....

I did recently enjoy both Long Live Evil and How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying!

Just an update - it turns out that Omnipage Ultimate is now very cheap, under £10 for lifetime use if you buy it online and download the files etc. A bit of a pain to set up since it's a fair while since I've used Omnipage, it's a bit different to 15, and I'd forgotten some tricks, but I got it working in the end. You can get it here

https://www.softwarerepairworld.com/

They're also doing the 2021 release of Corel Draw pretty cheaply, under £20 and I have a 15% discount code because I bought Omnipage - while Libre Office has its own draw program, I think I might be better off using a program that I already know in its earlier incarnation, hopefully there will be a smaller learning curve. Too tired to make decisions tonight though...

Mac versions are cheaper for some reason, but I prefer a bigger screen than my laptop.

And I may have noticed that I need something new to listen to.

Now, I've said this before and I'll definitely say it again, but audiodramas are, hands-down, the gayest media I have ever consumed. So, in honor of the occasion, three lists:

The End's collection of LGBTQ+ audiodrama with at least one completed season

A search of Audiofiction.co.uk's entire catalogue for audiodrama with LGBTQ+ creators
