Why does Gil care? I've been rereading the books and reminding myself what a nasty, sadistic person Bangladesh Dupree is. Granted, he's spent a lot of time fighting on the same side with her, but is that enough?

Another question: Why would a proposal from Gil be "super gross"? Are they somehow related? Skin color doesn't seem to be a major concern in this universe.

She was assigned as his protector when he was a relatively young man in Paris. We don't know how far back they go, but she's probably at least a few years older than he is.

Also, Bang's romantic ideal is Vole, based on his being a monster, in all negative senses. Gil is NICE. Ewww, cooties.

Yeah, I'd just as soon let Bang die. A lot of readers would hate that, but in Gil's shoes, well, if she's not going to be on my side...

We've seen some indication that Gil and Bang are almost like brother and sister. Which allows for both platonic love and hate.

Last we checked, Gil still had his heart set on Agatha. But since he's partly under Klaus' control, his sentiments may be in flux.

Gil has his heart set on Agatha, but he seems very taken with Trelawney Thorpe. So, for that matter, does Ardsley Wooster. (My money's on Wooster/Thorpe.)

It would be amusing if, after all the "Will Agatha choose Gil? Will Agatha choose Tarvek?" angst among fans, Gil married Trelawney Thorpe and Tarvek married Ruxala.

I wonder who Miss Baumhund and The Assistant will pair up with?

If Ivo Sharktooth has any bearing on the matter, The Assistant is Vanamonde von Mechkan's wife.

The linked page (notable for the phrase "snotulous child") implies that both Vanamonde and the Assistant grew up in Mechanicsburg, but I don't see more than that. I thought it was fairly clear that she was Van's wife, fiancee, or sister; at one point she undressed him for bed.

I'd love to pin down their relationship!

It's nothing Ivo said, it's the circumstances that Vanamonde and the Assistant are presented. And she can't be his sister as Van seems to be an only child at the time of his father's death and his mother did not appear to remarry.

It's my take on the relationship. The presence of some random child in that situation is rather odd, don't you think? She is the child of some one in that room (Occam's Razor).

Based on the novels it seems he heard about her, and sought her out to hire her when she was reduced from pirate queen to just pirate captain.

I think she feels it would be gross (aside from her belief that any emotions are gross) because they are practically brother and sister. All their interactions are basically like those of two extremely competitive siblings. We've seen recently when she talked to Tarvek about him, that she does care about him, in her way, and he makes it clear now that he cares about her.

There's a very strong big sister/little brother vibe between them, and yeah, that would be super gross.

Gil appears to be (unknowingly) committing to assisting Bang with her vendetta... against one of his beloved's closest friends. Classical tragedy stuff.

The imprint of Klaus in Gil's brain might prove to be a significant plot point here. I suspect that Klaus realized, after their very short conversation, that Zeetha was Gil's sister. Intervention by the imprint might prevent Bang or Gil from harming Zeetha ... or it might cause Gil to hesitate at a crucial moment and give Bang an opportunity to harm her.
