A bit of trivia: Gast is an obsolete verb meaning "scare." It could also be from the German "Gast," meaning guest. In this case, an unwelcome one.

As a verb, yes. But note that it's also an older English noun meaning "ghost" (and the German cognate is "geist").
In fact, the word "gast" means exactly that in modern Swedish, so it's not an isolated use.
