In the last panel, what is trailing after Lady Ariadne Steelgarter on the hallway carpet?

madfilkentist: Krosp, from Girl Genius by Phil and Kaja Foglio. (Krosp)

Her lower arms seem to be working now, though possibly injured. I don't think it's Violetta in disguise, unless she has impersonation skills that were never mentioned before.

What we really need to know is whose eye is behind the hole and what the "Great Work" is. And perhaps why that door has such a large peephole.

Yeah, the "Violetta in disguise" idea would have continued with V. finagling the door open and going after whoever was inside, not exiting stage right with divers alarums.

No way this is Violetta - how could she possibly know who is behind that door, and what to say?

Also: why does her hair smoke? Her French counterpart didn't bother with bleeding, so she is a biological construct. It may be for dramatic effect. Her skirt sure is torn.

Well, she did fight a smoke knight.

BTW, I'm starting to see her as Evil Marge Simpson.

I meant Professor Beausoleil.

(Sorry, the name momentarily escaped me and I didn't bother to look it up)

Given the size of the eye I'm beginning to wonder if it belongs to a sea creature. Also, that porthole doesn't appear to be in a door. No sign of a handle or other opening device. Wasn't there a mention of the rebellion of some kind of underwater subjects of Her Majesty?

Perhaps the Great Work the unknown speaker is talking of is part of a plan to bring through one of the Great Old Ones. Or maybe it's connected to the Creatures menacing Mechanicsburg. Though how Skifander ties into any of this is quite the mystery since as far as we know it is landlocked.

If they bring BLUE HADES into the story it's really going to get complex. Mind you that could explain why Britain is under water.

It's a door, see panel 6. But yes, not normally passable. Looks like a part of solid box or tank.
Experimental subject containment? Part of infrastructure?
