Given the knife in his back, Captain Dal is likely to bleed out and die without extremely prompt medical attention. He's unlikely to be able to reliably hold on to Gil in his current, rapidly deteriorating state, and if their contact slips even momentarily, Dal will die and Gil will be helpless in the time stop and be captured. Bad odds to bet on.
