I thought it was pretty much automatic, for Jägers Of A Certain Age. That was the implication of what happened to Vole. OTOH, Ivo seems to have the laid-back temperament (if not the physique).

Yeah, but he hasn't got the transformation yet, so he's not A Certain Age.

OTOH, he's old enough to have "...worked for almost all the Heterodynes," so there's that.
