And with all this timey-wimey stuff going on, might it be that Milvistle turned against Lucrezia because Lucrezia turned against Milvistle because she had learned that Milvistle was going to turn against her?

A forced error, perhaps. She could hardly hang in Ariadne's arms and wait for Lucrezia to get mad and attack her. Hardly comparable to Lucrezia thinking that she could use a device that Monahan personally installed to overwrite Monahan. (At least she didn't wind up in a mind trap like the Lucrezia who tried to steal Zola.)

But indeed, the clank body may be able to endure and employ the purified effluvia. Even if Lucrezia is out of this picture, Ariadne has cast her lot and a firm grip on Monahan, with which she might cast Monahan also into the fluid.

Ariadne has no good options. Lucrezia could help her, but possible contact with other instances is mostly a conjecture at this point, and she just had to cheese off Monahan (who probably isn’t too hypocritical to take a bit of opportunistic treachery in stride, considering the partners she picked — but contempt for her work can be another matter).
So… she is left holding the bag. Heh.

That's taking Steelgarter's betrayal at face value, though. She, Monahan, and Moonbark were all anticipating treachery from Lu, and this may have been their plan...she may have extemporized the part about the rats to add artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative, as it were.

Yeah, Monahan seems pretty confident in hanging there.

Wouldn't be too surprised, though, if it turns out she was just counting on shock value, or too caught up in yelling to realize Steelgarter's also a danger.

It’s just that if Ariadne expected to deal with Monahan again, she wouldn’t add the part about rats.

Steelgarter may be dangerous, but ultimately she is controllable. She let her main motivation be known, loud and clear. Monahan is her best remaining way to use the mirrors ever again, so…

OTOH, it (and grabbing Monahan, to be sure) convinced Lu that Steelgarter was on her side and she could proceed.

(At least, that's the way Steelgarter is probably going to spin it to minimize any lingering hard feelings.)

I'm curious exactly what Monahan means by "Not this time". Does she mean "not like the other people you've overwritten", or has Lucrezia done this to her before (or attempted to)?

It wouldn't make sense that Lucrezia has taken over Monahan previously. She may mean "You might have better luck in a future attempt, but I've got you thwarted for now."

There's a fair amount of time before "ultimately." She could act out of an impulse because she doesn't have time to plot.
