Looks like she changed mask in preparation of going to the waters, and at the same time Steelgarter put on some contraption that looks like a gas mask. I guess there's something in the air that they need to protect their lungs from, and the beaked mask is doing that?
As previously hypothesised the Queens were associated with waters like the Dyne - except there doesn't have to be a spring there, just a "Queen's Flame". This does presumably also power some of the mirrors. The Refuge of Storms could have a flame to power the mirror without having a spring. See also https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20211206 "Her flame will be near". But that also says "The mirrors can draw their power from many sources".
"Different thousands"? I get the impression that Lucrezia can't actually travel in time. She was born in the current era, but somehow later became the other, and appeared thousands of years back to kill the queens. But she seems to have returned by living through the intermediate times - for instance 500 years here https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20211201. So maybe she was hurled back in time somehow - possibly at the time the castle was crippled? Then somehow got the power to kill the queens, and also long life? But the summoning engine calls her from somewhere she doesn't have a normal body? She did have her usual body back when Albia saw her first. Did she perhaps get possessed by something to become the other? Perhaps Lozz?
If you look at the refuge of storms unit when Agatha & co come tumbling through it, it looks more like a construction than an actual mirror. Maybe they got the mirror part and had to power it some other way, but I've seen some folks hypothesize that it edit:was just a link that was created to the red cathedral mirror, without actually having another mirror to use.
If they can create a link to a mirror they know a lot more about the technology than we've seen any evidence of so far. For instance there's no indication that Lucrezia can do anything like that.
There are other possible interpretations: * Perhaps Lucrezia was on an alternate history timeline, one which might not have had some of our familiar characters (including Monahan) in it. Then she went back and altered some historical event, and that put her on the track that we're seeing now. * Perhaps Lucrezia visited between 500,000 BC and 480,000 BC, several Ice Ages ago. * Perhaps Lucrezia thinks that her years are better than bourgeois years.
So, what corrupted it? Could this be a trap for the usurper? I mean, she noticed because change from the last time is drastic, but if she was sitting there using it, and these changes happened very slowly, she could fail to notice until far too late.
