Realistically (if we can apply that word here), I'd be worried that the two clanks are about to be ruined or destroyed. "The stone itself is rotting" suggests the presence of a strong corrosive agent.

In fact, I expect they'll discover something exciting on Wednesday.

The blue glow suggests rather a lot of energy is involved in the damage to the stone.
