Did the key return by its homing magic, or did the three-eyed cat-face stealthily take it while leaning close?

I'll guess neither, yet, but it won't look the same when he gets it back out of his pocket.

So, Snakkerjape is not only recent but came specifically to get in the ground floor of the re-chartered Guild? Potential ulterior motives abound -- where to begin speculating?

Until we find out otherwise, I'll assume that the Castle has a lot to do with the key going back to where it belongs, though plausibly the Guildhall was itself a sentient entity and that's its core, waiting.
