This is confusing. Captain Don't Care is still alive, he has a comfortable chair down in the ruins, but he's talking as if he still has no hope. The Castle and Beast clanks are going right past him without noticing. Maybe Friday's page will make some sense of this.

Castle and Beast are terrible spies who are far too focused on their own conversation (and possibly a little short, but that doesn't explain overlooking the Captain's feet) to notice things that Agatha would consider important.

Captain Don't Care ... guess we'll find out after all. I'm glad he's back on the page. He may really not care about anything but being paid and maybe his next drink.

They seem to think his boots are just some more abandoned footwear.

At least two possibilities: 1) He's hiding just like the Rat Man, 2) He's actually the topside residents' getaway car... er, ship? but can't be arsed to care about anything else.

Or possibly both.

I don't know if the Foglios would want to get into such things, but the guy may have clinical depression expressed as apathy. He's able to do a job if it's put in front of him, but lacks the motivation to take action independently.

My take on "Captain I don't care": It's a survival mechanism. He usually deals with shady types. He has no interest in whatever it is they are doing. Therefore, the weird, little clanks are none of his business. A variation on Sgt. Schultz' "I see nothing! Nothing!"

Or he lost everything/one he cared about. Or it's a result of mind control (he notices things, then standing order "don't care..." catches up with him).

That brightly colored spider worries me. In nature, colors like that tend to mean "Beware! I am poisonous as fuck." Or venomous as fuck. Or both.

Or it could be something designed by a Spark. Which is even *more* disturbing.

Wasn't there a species of the same in Der Kestle in Mechanicsburg? Or something similar? The one who tried to eat Zola very nicely with a fork and a knife?

The "Variegated Knife & Fork Spider", AKA "Nyar Spider".

This one is more blue/less green, not hairy and "rib" stripes don't go all the way down its abdomen.

I'm arachnophobic, if you haven't noticed. (Although I happened to think the NYAR spider was kinda cute, with its cutlery and all. Wonder where they keep them?)
