This isn't the first time Higgs has appeared averse to needles. The previous time, though, was because letting his blood be taken would have revealed too much about him.
While packing books, I opened my copy of What's New? and found a page where Phil's avatar throws a regular cat at a giant rat monster. The action takes place out of frame, but the sound effects suggest it goes badly for the cat.
