And yet, I believe Word of God -- a decade or so ago -- was that there will not be a visit to the Americas in the course of the story, nor will there be an explanation of the problem.
A lot of things can be not revealed outright, but hinted at. =) The true nature of Higgs eventually had to be spelled out, there may be many other "secrets" that won't be.
This "castaway's" story smells of moldy socks in so many ways. He's been successfully hiding for years, yet Agatha's bunch discovers him within minutes of landfall. When discovered, he screamed his head off rather than getting away as quietly as he could. That rat suit would never fool a human or a rat.
Yup - bait or a decoy. Lady Steelgarter seems genuinely appalled by the 'rats' so they are going to be pretty horrible. Maybe some sort of rat/spider hybrid?
Our new friend may really have arrived on the Ester de Groot some years ago, but I'm guess he's now probably working for Monahan, although he could be an escaped experiment. Either way he is going to be trouble.
I disagree -- I expect this to be like meeting the plumbers in Sturmhalten -- finding someone with strong local area knowledge who can brief the main characters and help them through their current situation. The story has a strong thread of people having different specialties and levels of ability, and of improving with dedication, time, and practice. This one guy who's the survivor among the survivors is very motivated and could be that much better at hiding than any of the mass of unnamed rat minions is at finding something they're not particularly looking for, but not better than Agatha's ability to build a widget that does what she needs, even if it does so in a rather unexpected way.
This also reminds me of meeting Higgs, but a good chunk of that is the airman's uniform. Higgs got a much more detailed, pro-active badass intro that involved multiple previously introduced named characters. This gentleman I expect will flee the story (and the island) at the end of this segment.
