It is rather - I was expecting something a bit more sophisticated than the old "Earth Shattering KABOOM" trick.

Will the villains believe it? If not, is there a second level to the deception?

Easy to hide themselves coming down to the sea surface as bits of debris. If the sparks put their ~four hours into building a little submarine or several, they might make it to the island unobserved. I wonder if they're bringing the crew to the island, or if the crew willl use more obvious lifeboats and call for a pickup or what. (Was the communications equipment preserved?) They've got the badly injured chief officer to consider, too.

And the traitorous or wasped captain. Being good guys, they can't just kill him — unless Bang did before they could stop her.

I will be surprised if the captain survived being deposed by Bang -- and he may've been tossed overboard as excess weight either way. Finding out whether he was wasped, bribed, or actively treacherous would be interesting, though, if they still have him to interrogate or examine. Did Steelgarter get lucky to have an agent on that ship, does she have enough agents out there that she was likely to have one in place, or did she arrange to have Agatha's party on a ship where she had an agent?
