I have never thought Dim was meant to be funny. He is the first case we readers see of Klaus' "research". His appearance immediately explained why Beetle refused to be taken alive.

His mind is gone, but they are trying to show that he is not distressed by this.

I, too, have seen a relative mentally deteriorate. It's not pleasant. But remember, as Krosp points out to Albia, Klaus did this.

I had always read Dmitri's last name as "Vapnoodle". But a few days ago, I saw that it was "Vapnoople".
