That was actually what I was thinking a couple of weeks back with that line that everyone thought must be a clue of time travel.
It had the feel of malicious compliance, or of trying to hint at information he is strictly forbidden from revealing but needs them to know he has. Or, actually, given the number of Lucrezias on this ship, perhaps just a hint that the Other was there and directly controlling him.
